Where to Stay in Corralejo, Fuerteventura

Where to stay

Corralejo is Fuerteventura's most popular holiday town, in the north of the island, and it works as a base because almost everything is within walking distance.

The town centre and harbour put you next to restaurants, shops and the ferry port, and are the easiest choice if you don't want a car. Close to the centre, the Oasis Duna complex is extremely popular, with Atlantic Garden right next door, and the Bristol Playa area is another favourite, all within easy reach of the town and the beaches. Heading east, the apartments and villa complexes near the dunes give you quick access to the huge white-sand beaches of the Corralejo natural park, a protected stretch of dunes with turquoise sea.

Geafond is a practical residential area, with a Mercadona and a Lidl nearby and a new medical centre currently being built. Parque Holandés, to the south, is a quieter residential area that suits families and longer stays.

Corralejo is part of the municipality of La Oliva, which covers the whole north of Fuerteventura, so several places close by are worth knowing. Lajares is an inland village known for its surf and craft-market scene, La Oliva is the municipality's historic village in the interior, Villaverde is a quiet agricultural village, popular with residents, with many large properties and some of the island's best restaurants, and El Cotillo, on the west coast, is a former fishing village with sheltered lagoon beaches and good seafood. All are within around 15-20 minutes by car, and the small island of Lobos is a short boat trip from the harbour.

Getting there

Fuerteventura Airport (FUE), near Puerto del Rosario, is about 35-40 minutes by car from Corralejo. A new motorway between the airport and Corralejo is close to completion and is expected to bring the drive down to around 20 minutes. There is no direct bus: public transport means taking a bus to Puerto del Rosario, the island's capital, and changing there, so a transfer, taxi or hire car is usually easier. A hire car is also useful if you want to explore the island. Ferries cross to Playa Blanca on Lanzarote in about 30 minutes, which makes a day trip easy, and boats to Isla de Lobos take around 15 minutes.

Weather and best time to visit

Corralejo has a mild, dry climate all year round, with winter days around 20°C and sea temperatures of roughly 18-23°C through the year. The northeast trade winds blow most of the time, strongest in summer, which is exactly why the area is famous for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and why you should bring a windbreaker for the beach. April-June and September-November are pleasant and less crowded, while winter is popular for sun-seekers escaping colder countries.

What to eat

Look for fresh fish such as vieja and sama served simply grilled, papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) with red and green mojo sauce, and the island's goat products, including the award-winning queso majorero cheese and roast or stewed cabrito (kid goat). Gofio, a toasted-grain flour, turns up in soups and desserts. The harbour and El Cotillo are good places for a seafood lunch.
